Ghosting Meaning: What It Is and How to Respond

Published: Updated: 7 minutes read

Quick Summary

Ghosting meaning is simple: someone disappears without explanation. Ghosting hurts so much because it leaves you without the closure that comes with an honest ending. I learned that firsthand when someone I had been dating for two months suddenly disappeared, and I went from making excuses for him to obsessively checking my phone and replaying our last conversation. Ghosting can happen after a few dates or even in serious relationships, and while people ghost for different reasons, silence still causes real emotional distress. My advice is simple: give yourself space to feel it, cut the digital connection, reality-check the relationship, keep your life moving, and remember that someone who chooses silence is showing you something important about how they communicate.

All of us can relate to that situation and to the same person texting a newcomer, a new partnership feeling really great and then all of a sudden… silence. Not even a message saying “it’s not working out,” “I met someone else,” just complete silence. Ghosting, my friend, is just that – a soul-tearing experience in all its different forms.

I want to share my first encounter with ghosting. I had been dating the guy for almost two months – no more talking, only real dates. We had been introduced to each other’s friends, had developed some inside jokes, etc. Then one Tuesday, following what looked like a perfectly normal goodnight text exchange, he disappeared. Just like that – poof. The next two weeks I was teetering between “he probably lost his phone” and “I guess I was too strong when I told him that I liked the stupid band he loved.” People in this situation often benefit from reading about feeling lost after a breakup.

My First Experience With Ghosting (And What It Taught Me)?

Ghosting is not solely the case when a Tinder match goes silent after just three messages (although that situation is also painful). True ghosting happens when:

  • You have already gone to several dates, and the next moment they are gone.
  • You are in a serious relationship and suddenly they are nowhere to be found.
  • You have had regular communication for weeks/months and they just go silent.
  • They are breadcrumbing you (sending messages very occasionally to retain your interest, but never actually being involved).

The key point is not to give any reason for their actions. One moment you are planning your weekend together and the next you are looking at your phone as if it has done something wrong to you. This connects closely with texting versus calling, which has its own article.

Ghosting in Dating: Why People Do It (From Both Sides)

I’ll be honest – there was one time that I ghosted. It happened years ago, and I still feel awkward about it. This is what ran through my head:

  1. Overpowered by everything – Life became quite chaotic, and answering back seemed like yet another duty.
  2. I didn’t know how to express “I’m not into it” – Therefore, I chose to be silent.
  3. I made up that it was not a big deal – “We just had a few dates, they’ll be over it soon”.

Surely, none of these were sound reasons. When I was later at the receiving end, I understood how much it hurts. Other common reasons for ghosting:

  • They are dating someone else and are too gutless to tell you.
  • • They are not emotionally into it but do not want to admit it.
  • • They think of you as a fallback option.
  • • They are going through personal matters (but still a quick text lasts only two seconds).

The Hidden Psychological Impact of Ghosting That Nobody Talks About

The physical nervousness was the most shocking thing for me about ghosting. I really went through a period of days when I was feeling nauseous and stressed. My mind kept on going round the same track with intrusive thoughts such as:

  • Restlessness made me check my phone every 5 minutes.
  • • I was going through our last chat for “clues” and getting flooded with feelings.
  • • Rumination led me to think whether I should try contacting “one more time.”
  • • I was feeling so ashamed of telling my friends because it was like social rejection and low self-esteem.

The worst part? The lack of closure was very damaging to my mental health, leaving me with emotional distress that didn’t fade away quickly, that uncertainty and a heavy feeling of seclusion.

How to Respond to Ghosting Like a Pro (My 5-Step Plan)

Applying to my own ghosting situation (along with a lot of support from Ben & Jerry’s), I came up with a 5-step recovery plan:

1. The 48-Hour Rule

Allow yourself to experience the pain for two complete days. Cry it out. Talk to your best friend about it. Watch movies that are sad. And then? Get over it.

2. The Digital Cleanse

Get rid of their phone number. Don’t follow them on social media anymore. Don’t make yourself suffer any longer. It also helps to read up on questions to ask a girl; we break it down in a companion article.

3. The Reality Check

Jot down all their bad points. The strange laughter? The fact that they never took an interest in your profession? Keep it nearby.

4. The Distraction Plan

Enroll in that cooking course. Make a travel plan. Get in touch with old friends. Busy your schedule in such a way that you have no time to think.

5. The Perspective Shift

Don’t forget: A person who goes away doesn’t deserve to be with you anyway. I have been a personal support to more than 40 people, both friends and clients, in this process, and the truth is that every one of them admitted that it was sooner or later that they felt less loaded after taking the steps one after the other. Should You Ever Confront a Ghoster? (Hard Truths)

If they come back (which is a common occurrence), you have different reactions:

  • The Graceful Exit: “Hey, since I haven’t heard from you, I assumed you weren’t interested. That’s okay – good luck!”
  • The Truth Bomb: “Ghosting is really childish. If you are not into it, please, next time just say so.”
  • The Silent Treatment – Sometimes, no reply is the mightiest reply.

To be honest? I choose the first option. It does not take away your dignity but also makes it straight that you will not put up with disrespect. For another angle, take a look at what we wrote about getting over a breakup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What Exactly Is Ghosting & How Do I Know If It’s Happening?

Girl, you KNOW. That feeling in your stomach when you check your phone every minute..!!! When you start to think if they were hit by a bus because SURELY they wouldn’t just ignore you? Yes. That’s ghosting.

Q2. Why Does Ghosting Hurt More Than a Breakup?

Because with a breakup, you at least can mourn, yell, cry, eat ice cream and then wave it off like that. Ghosting leaves you in a horrible limbo where you, like a fool, are still waiting for them to reply. It is the emotional equivalent of blue balls.

Q3. Should I Text Them ‘Lol Guess You Died’?

Very tempting, but no, don’t. Do this instead: take a screenshot of their profile and send it to your group chat, let your friends rip them for 20 minutes and then erase their number. Way more gratifying.

Q4. What If They Were Just Busy Or Whatever?

Babe, our times are such that one may not even be in the bathroom when texting. No person is that busy. Anyone could have just sent a quick “swamped, talk later” unless he/she was really in a coma. But, he/she is not. That’s why he/she is a loser.

Q5. How Do I Talk About Ghosting Without Sounding Pathetic?

Why?? Just make it funny! “So this coward really pulled a Houdini on me…” Anyone worth being a friend has gone through this. And if they criticize you? New friends.

Q6. How Could people Ghost If We Clicked So Well?

Did you? Or did you just read too much into a person’s little effort? (Ouch, sorry but it is true; we all have been there.)

Q7. When Will I Stop Checking My Phone?

When you realize that you are treating your phone like a Magic 8 Ball that could give you random validation. Throw it across the room and go call someone who would actually pick up.

Q8. What If I Was The Problem?

Unless you did something terrible like scratch their car, NO. Ghosting is an act of emotionally-challenged people who prefer it over adult communication. It’s their loss.

Q9. Do They Want Attention Or Just Hate Themselves?

Darlings, just go ahead and flaunt it while they peep at you. Nothing can upset a ghoster more than seeing that you are completely and utterly unaffected.

Q10. Will I Ever Get Over Ghosting?

Absolutely and positively yes! You will be sitting there talking to a wonderful person when you will suddenly recall “Oh my God, I used to care about that ghoster?” It’s just like getting over food poisoning – it seems to last forever while you are experiencing it, but before you know it, you will be having sushi again and no one will know anything happened.

The Silver Lining

Ghosting has been my teacher and the lesson I have learned is that it is the universe’s way of pushing away the people who aren’t worth your time and who don’t belong in your life. The one meant for you will not keep you in doubt. He/she will appear. He/ she will communicate. He/she will let you know he/she wants to stay.

Hence, if you have been ghosted, just take it easy and do your things – healing, growing, and being open. The good ones are the ones that take time to come. For example, one of my readers once told me that she met her future husband just two months after being ghosted by her ex, this is a classic case where rejection has been turned into redirection.
